Satsuma Gishiden

Hiroshi Hirata's Satsuma Gishiden is set in the feudal period after Tokugawa Ieyasu unified most of Japan bringing about an uneasy era of peace. Most samurai are poor, restless and quickly becoming outclassed by merchants and peasants. Starving, they are left with little but the memories of the glory and power they and their families once had.

The story focuses around a lowly samurai felon fighting for his life after refusing to compromise his code of honor to the moral degradation that permeates the village bureaucracy. The story shifts between history lesson, wartable politik, and bloody swift violence.

Hirata's artwork beautifully captures this turbulent period of Japanese history. With a style reminiscent of the well renowned Goseki Kojima's Lone Wolf & Cub combined with that of Blade of the Immortal, Hirata inks out a number of beautiful full page spreads. Giving focus to the human form, Hirata uses one page to illustrate a gory ninja decapitation and the next to depict the various handicrafts undertaken by samurai laborers giving stunning detail to a variety of action and setting.

Tekkon Kinkreet (Black & White)

Nicolas Gurewitch (Perry Bible Fellowship)

The Perry Bible Fellowship is without a doubt one of the best webcomics available. Each comic contains a unique brand of dark humor and many include further self-referential jokes hidden within the panel along with subtle visual puns and metaphors.

Nicholas Gurewitch's art is vibrant, to-the-point, and often incredibly detailed. Gurewitch also has a habit of changing his art style sometimes on a per-comic basis and often in imitation of other artists. In an enterprise where computers have made recycling characters, frames and backgrounds overly simplified, Gurewitch's dedication is no laughing matter.

Wolverine

Logan - Path of the Warlord

Wolverine-Weapon X

Hulk & Wolverine - 6 Hours
(Illustration: Scott Kolins)
(Writer: Bruce Jones)

Wolverine is indubitably one of the foundations of the Marvel empire. Not quite a hero, not quite a villain, Wolverine has a past that is stained with blood. Tragically, most comix with Wolverine prefer simply to reference this sordid past, and instead focus on his enfatuation with Jean or Ororo, reducing the meat-mincing machine into a ackward loverboy.

The works displayed here are my personal favorites, either because of the amazing artwork, or because of the importance of the storyline to the Wolverine’s character.

Wolverine & Nick Fury - The Scorpio Connection
(Illustration: Howard Chaykin)
(Writer: Archie Goodwin)

Why you should care: Uncensored Wovlie, raw and uncut, tearing it up with his pigstickers. These comix are action packed, explore Wolverines more formative years, and showcase some of Marvel’s best illustrators.

Shamo

A dark manga, Shamo follows the story of a young boy who murders his parents and becomes interned in a juvenile reformatory. In order to survive, he begins to study Karate, which serves as a foil for Japanese nationalist identity. This is a a very violent manga, but thoroughly enjoyable for its insights into Japanese complacency, the possibility/necessity of a new Japanese nationalism, and its detailed depiction of various martial arts.

Why you should care: Any hardcore action fans out there? Apart from the dealing with issues of alienation, identity, suffering and loss, Shamo gives particularly poignant insight into a the need for a national Japanese identity, and makes a strong case for rooting it in Karate.

Sanctuary

Sanctuary is the story of an alliance between an up-and-coming politician and a Yakuza underworld boss, and how they aim to transform Japan by waking it from its complacent lethargy.

Why you should care: This manga showcases picture-perfect illustration, and gives some insight into the Japanese political machine. Japanes political history lessons are punctuated by Yakuza gang violence, which lend the manga its energy. Like Shamo, Sanctuary also explores the need for a modern Japanese nationalism, and what it might imply.

Robert Crumb

Robert Crumb is a sick and twisted man. He is, however, well-aware of the fact. Crumb’s work is legendary, having revolutionized the uderground comix scene in the early 70s with work in ZAP, Wierdo, and other short-lived "art for art´s sake" publications.

Crumb’s contribution to comix cannot be underestimated, in spite of his unapologetic misogeny. Crumb’s style, his shading, and his dark humor are noticeable in many works today.

Crumb is the creator of Fritz the Cat, Mr. Snoid, The Lighter than Air Boys, and of course, Mr. Natural.

Why you should care: Themes include: Anti-institutionalism, the objectification of women (particulaly strong and stocky women, with large feet ), sex, foot-fetishism, personal confession, hardcore drugs, societal decay, alienation, and old-time American Blues (see Heroes of the Blues).

Crumb’s use of the comix page as a confessional is particularly significant in that it has influenced a whole new generation to work in a similar way, exposing their own demons for all to see.

Golden Boy

Benkio Benkio Benkio! (Study Study Study!)

Golden Boy follows the story of a college dropout named Kintaro who travels Japan in order to learn from life. Apart from its thoroughly optimistic outlook, Golden Boy is filled with interesting tidbits on Japan, things which Kintaro himself has to learn. Apart from the etchi component of the Manga—which I personally have no problem with and recognize as a historically significant form of Japanese humor—Golden Boy serves as somewhat of a textbook for Japanese professions, and what they entail.

Why you should care: Thoroughly funny, interesting panel composition (in the avoidance of direct censorship), and an engaging storyline with many insights into Japanese life .

Benkio Benkio Benkio! (Estudia! Estudia! Estudia!)

Blade of the Immortal

Blade of the Immortal is one of the most beautiful manga I have seen, period. Set in ancient Japan, it follows the story of a ronin who apparently cannot be killed… only dismembered. Every character in the manga has his/her own complex life-story, making it difficult to sympathize entirely with the “heroes.” Morality is difficult to ascertain in a world filled with contradictions… Blood depts however, have to be paid.

Why you should care:
Amazing artwork, action-packed, thorough character development, and chalked full of historical significance (it documents the end of the era of the Samurai). Truly one of the best Manga to ever come out of Japan.

Berserk

Battle Royal

Battle Royal
is the story of a High School class destined for extermination at the hands of former classmates. In the manga, Battle Royal is the most popular reality TV show in Japan, where students are randomly alloted weapons and set loose to eliminate one another on a forcefully abandoned island.

Why you should care: Apart from being action-packed and thoroughly engaging ‘till the end, Battle Royale explores a variety of themes in depth, including: parental neglect, the disaffection of youth, identity politics, governmental abuse, trust, media manipulation, class divisions, sociopathy, friendship, and fetishism.
